It is necessary for such a person to earn acceptance to the profession in question. There are certain tests and standards of professional conduct which must be satisfied before a person is accepted into the profession. Some of the more common professions include doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers, scientific researchers, and social workers. The above indicated procedures are, of course, an essential aspect of any program to maintain standards of professional behavior. The natural consequence of failing to maintain standards would be a blurring of the line of distinction between professionals and non-professionals, between those who have mastered the knowledge, techniques and skills of the profession---and those who have not. In such an eventuality the citizens who need the services of the professionals would be in doubt as to whom to turn to in time of need. Citizens might become the victims of those who only presumed to be competent. For these reasons it is necessary for professionals to maintain vigilance over the abilities of members of the profession, even after initial acceptance. Formal and informal techniques exist to see to it that failure is justly rewarded whenever it becomes apparent to others. For this reason professions develop techniques which help them impress self and others (within the profession) of their high levels of competence. In this way professional incompetence rarely becomes apparent to others; and the "integrity" of the profession is maintained. Professionals are usually persons who have specialized. In order to maintain their status it is necessary to maintain their specialized competence and to extend it. There is rarely enough time in the life of any person to do all that is felt necessary to maintain an acceptable degree of competency. Thus professionals often find their lives full of maintaining their professional status, and have rather little time for meditation upon possible new roles as servants seeking to help others solve their own real problems. The professional is particularly susceptible to the danger of failing to participate in authentic meetings with real persons who are are seeking mutual awareness and mutual understanding. Programs designed to maintain professional standards will rarely help professionals transcend the dilemma of dealing with finitude. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
