Then, there are some who are so compulsive in the service of their parent that they become agents of alienation. It is difficult to say when principles are so important that one should maintain them even at the expense of some or total alienation from associates. It is safe to say that one may well sense a need to reform one's value structure if it regularly serves to generate, maintain, or intensify alienation. It may not be the values themselves which are the agents of alienation. It may be that it is the structure in which values are given practical significance which is the agent of alienation. Is smoking good for one's health? There is clear evidence that it is not. If one values sound health and has the facts about the natural consequences of smoking, one may properly regard those who smoke as not behaving wisely. Is that the same as saying explicitly or implicitly, "Anyone who smokes is no friend of mine."? No! For the latter statement reveals an element of structure in which the negative value of smoking is given existential significance; an element of structure which is the agent of alienation. The conviction that smoking is not wise need not generate alienation. In place of "smoking" one may substitute many other behavior patterns which may be regarded as non-helpful; be it an act of commission or omission: regarding drugs, drinking, sexual consciousness, studying, academic planning, extracurricular activities, etc. Natural scientists tend to be dedicated to certain values which are related to success in objective analysis and manipulation. Like most humans, many scientists tend to be arrogant towards others who do not share the same values and self-images. Unfortunately, we are often the victims of structural elements which when combined with values generate a value structure in which the existential effect is alienation from those who do not share the same values. There is a need for a new structure in which positive values may be affirmed and given existential significance without generating generally avoidable alienation. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
