The author does not wish to take sides in any contemporary debate over good and evil in relation to science. Participants in such debates rarely hear each other. Readers may nevertheless assume that the author has in fact taken sides, and approach these essays within that state of consciousness. Such readers will find ample proof for themselves within the essays to substantiate their assumption, but they will profit relatively little from reading the essays. The essays contain many bold, unsubstantiated, ambiguous, sweeping statements without evident authority to justify them. If approached with the expectation of finding carefully reasoned and documented arguments in support of a few basic propositions, these essays will appear presumptions and shallow. Scholars in search of faults will find many, but they will profit relatively little from reading the essays. Some readers may be seeking new hypotheses, new categories, new awareness, and new states of consciousness in terms of which the modern crisis in science and society may be understood and perceived to have meaning.
