The dominant focus of their attention is more likely to be upon techniques to achieve a student-desired result in the objective evaluation of playing collusive games of mutual self deception. It should be openly recognized that the process of successfully meeting externally imposed standards of achievement---does not generate habits and motivation which endure beyond the time period when those standards are imposed. The habits which are developed are habits which are helpful in meeting the externally imposed standards. As soon as that pattern of externally imposed standards passes, the habits become passe. Consider a student who is liberated from externally imposed standards---and is guided into personally selecting and internalizing appropriate goals and foci of attention. He or she will continue to grow. Leaving the persons who facilitated the selections and internalization---will not result in the decay of the integrative habits and behavior patterns which resulted from that educational endeavor. Motivation will flow from the soul---rather than from academic policies, and therefore will be effective. American higher education will elicit students' respect when it learns to respect the need of students to maintain their personal integrity through the exercise of free-will; through students' decisions and actions---and through the self evaluation of the natural consequences of those decisions and actions. In recent years relatively fewer young adults have chosen to seek the conventional college education because college professors have not elicited the respect of such young adults in word and deed. Standards of human conduct are best transmitted by living examples. Academic policies are impotent in the absence of incarnations of that which the policies seek to encourage. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
