People are constantly seeking the new---to escape the boredom of and the enslavement of the old. Through imagination and fantasy possibilities come to mind and then there is motivation to seek ways of fulfilling those possibilities. Through value judgments there is a setting of priorities by individuals who then through political action cause scarce resources to be used in an effort to realize the possibilities. In recent years men have realized possibilities which were beyond the imagination and fantasy of previous men. In may instances the realizations were not beyond imagination and fantasy---but were confidently, even if regretfully, regarded as inherently impossible to realize. Such instances have taught many that all impossible dreams are in fact realizable through the development of knowledge, understanding, technique, and collective effort. Those who have learned this lesson, thoughtlessly feel that it is impossible to dream a truly impossible dream. Such a faith is harmless, unless it leads to political actions which through the nature of reality have natural consequences which are irreversible in human history and ultimately cause many (if not all) to cease to live. The faith that technocrats will always find more energy sources---can lead to a global society addicted to the rapid consumption of energy --- but with an inadequate supply to satisfy the addiction. The groundless faith can lead to a technocratic society that has essentially human dilemmas which can not be solved via technique, yet will destroy the society---because of an inadequate resource of attractive scientists able to deal creatively with the dilemmas. The faith can lead to lives in which there is accomplishment of many "impossible dreams" but no occasions of fulfillment within the presence of hope and meaning. The groundless faith can lead to a society in which there are no miracles, and in their place is the fulfillment of trends toward the fabrication of the technocrats' impossible dreams---through the death of real persons.
