When oppression takes the form of one group of people imposing limitations on the freedom of another group of people---the revolution may naturally take the form of violence directed toward the perceived foci of power --- the people, their buildings, their professions, their tools of oppression. Revolution is far more difficult when it is not one people imposing limitations upon another people, but rather common collusions and unexamined assumptions imposing limitations upon a society as a whole. The oppression may be just as real. The frustration and anger may be just as great. The inclination to violence may grow, and on occasion find expression---but be of little help. The adolescent who spends all his energy in rebellion against an internalized parent---is just as enslaved to the parent, as the acquiescent adolescent. Neither behavior leads directly to the transcendence of the limitations of the parent. Neither leads to I'm-OK. The frustrations, anger, and violence which characterized the late 1960's were indicative of oppression, some of which was of one group of people by another group of people. The more pervasive forms of oppression were never made manifest, however. Many have become resigned to these unknown forms of oppression--- because they know not where to turn to fight them. The sources of these unknown forms of oppression are hidden in the collusions and unexamined assumptions which pervade the society. Violence directed at persons, buildings, professions, and tools---will not free anybody from such oppression. Only prophets who can think clearly and enter into dialogue with political leaders will be able to lead the way in a revolution which will free modern people of their peculiarly modern forms of oppression. Like any people who have grown accustomed to oppression, modern people may have grown comfortable with the oppressive status quo--- and so do not greet with joy those who would liberate them to assume the risks of real rights, responsibility, and free choice. Even so, the foundations for revolution may be laid by prophets who tell it like it is to modern humans enslaved by their modem myths about the nature of reality. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
