We know each other within personal relationships which those of a more "advanced" society would be inclined to call "religious", "practical", "political", "scientific", entertainment, "celebration", "ritualistic", "work", "education", "retirement", etc. The relatively few members of an interactive society knew each other fully within a wide variety of relationship contexts. Through the efforts of technocrats we now have many modern channels of communication which can facilitate the transmission of information, goods, services, and people over great distances and at great speed. The net effect has been the fragmentation of community. The break up of family life and codes of conduct are one natural consequence. Sub-cultures sharing an interest or a style of life, rather than a geographic territory, are another natural consequence. A nomadic disrespect for the quality of the environment is yet another. There is yet another natural consequence which is not often commented upon. It is now difficult for many educated persons to maintain personal integrity within the fail-safe context of a community that has integrity, for few such communities exist. A true community is not a collection of persons metabolizing within a geographic region. A true community is the set of relationships which bind certain persons together in hope and meaning as they work to solve their real problems and dilemmas through dialogue in authentic meetings. To be successful they must have individual and corporate integrity. This means that religious activities are not divorced from practical activities. Nor is work divorced from education. Nor is retirement divorced from celebration. The individual can maintain personal integrity because it is possible to participate in relationships of many differing types, yet within a community of persons who join with self in most of those differing types of relationships. The modern self is fragmented in part because the institutions within which self must seek to find meaning-- -are fragmented and lack integrity. There are religious institutions, and business institutions, and political institutions, and scientific institutions etc. There are now no communities with sufficient integrity to unite all these aspects of life. Individuals can not on their own develop personal integrity. What is the way out? (c) 1999 by Paul A.
