The motivations and goals which lead to human tragedies are often respected and honored. Too rarely do communities recognize the ways in which such motivations and goals lead to their frequently tragic outcomes --- because of how people often: 1. Do not consider the costs of probable alienations. 2. Think that "good" motivations/goals naturally lead to "good" outcomes. 3. Think too little about unintended consequences. 4. Are ignorant of how inter-connected people are. 5. Are indifferent to how other people will be affected by particular courses of action. 6. Focus upon too few ideals, values and principles. 7. Ignore essential ideals, values and principles. 8. Go to unbalanced extremes in getting their own way. 9. Abuse powers they have --- to get what they want. 10. Abuse people who are poor, weak and vulnerable. 11. Are preoccupied with how they will be perceived by other people whom they want to impress "favorably". 12. Focus upon issues of control, conformity, and propriety --- without any regard for: integrity, honesty, creativity, openness, and balanced dialogue. It is dangerous to respect, honor and support leaders whose attitudes, assumptions, and preoccupations frequently lead to tragic outcomes in the ways suggested above. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
