Consider the situation of the religious non-believer
who seeks to make an informed decision about which
religious group to affiliate with. How is such a person
to proceed?
Many religious leaders ask the non-believer to begin
by accepting their assumptions, attitudes, and definitions
of what are the root human problems. The "outsider" is
not encouraged to become informed about various religions
and then make an informed decision about what each
religion offers --- on the basis of some ideals, values,
and principles which are transcendent and affirmed by most
religions. Often the "outsider" is asked to begin by
accepting assumptions, adopting attitudes and respecting
definitions of what are the root human problems --- a
beginning which will lead naturally to concluding that the
religion of those making the request is the "best". This
is a request to begin in a biased way! Is that a request
which should engender respect for the religion of the
person making the request?
Many religious leaders have made assumptions, have
attitudes and have made definitions of what are the root
human problems --- which have led to very exclusive
tendencies toward intolerance of members of complementary
religious groups. Does their exclusivity give anyone
grounds for respecting the religion which engenders such
exclusivity and intolerance?
