The following contribute to making this be so: 1. People who are relatively more ignorant, confused and/or mis-informed --- can be made more vulnerable by people who are less ignorant, confused and/or mis- informed. 2. People who are relatively more powerful, respected and/or knowledgeable --- have the advantage in trying to manipulate people who are relatively less powerful, respected and/or knowledgeable. 3. Fulfillment in intimate sexual relationships entails becoming willing to trust another person and let go of inhibitions --- to become vulnerable and take risks. 4. True security is enjoyed as the freedom to be safely vulnerable --- and is not achieved through the elimination of all forms of vulnerability. 5. The opportunities for relational manipulations are increased by keeping people of some particular gender, race, or persuasion ignorant, confused and/or mis-informed about human sexuality. 6. People who are in formal and or informal positions of leadership, dominance, and judgment have the advantage over people who are not in such positions --- when it comes to using guilt, shame and ignorance as tools of manipulation and control. 7. People who are preoccupied with issues of control have the advantage over simple child-like and trusting people --- when it comes to manipulating the latter people's guilt, shame and ignorance. 8. Various forms of addiction and codependence are intimately inter-related with various forms of dysfunctional friendships, intimacy and sexuality --- as described by Kasal in her book "Women, Sex and Addiction." To help our communities and their members to transcend dysfunctional intimate and sexual relationships we need to recognize, name, describe and deal with the above factors which contribute to the conception and growth of such relationships. People of power who are preoccupied with issues of good/evil, law/order, control and/or conformal morality are unlikely to welcome such transcendence --- for Love and Truth both challenge their grips on principalities, powers, controls, honors and respectability. We need to be careful about whom we thoughtlessly respect, honor, support and react to. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
