To be without controls is to be depraved. It is impossible for people to be without controls and be people of integrity who are open, honest and worthy of respect. Such people cannot tolerate the presence in their communities of people whose lives are not dominated by controls---for their presence is a threat to their own world-view and their view of the nature of being human. Uncontrolled people are threats to their very being. Thus, they insist that controls be imposed in order that they themselves not be threatened by the presence of people who are not dominated by controls. There are people who take advantage of opportunities to manipulate patterns of controls; for by taking control of the patterns of control, they can gain much power and much personal advantage. The more that people are dominated by patterns of control---the more power they have opportunity to take control of. Thus they support the demands for the imposition of controls by people who cannot tolerate the presence in their communities of people whose lives are not dominated by controls. Such demands put additional opportunities for power into their own hands. There are people who fear freedom and the responsibilities which go with being free to make choices and act upon them. They want to live simple lives in conformity to good patterns which leave few choices for them to make. They do not want to be liberated, and claim that they are not constrained; because they are comfortable and comforted by the fact that they have to make very few choices of their own. Such people also are supportive of the demands of people who feel threatened by those who are free, liberated, creative, and not dominated by controls. As we consider people and their demands, we need to look beyond the surface nature of their demands to see where their demands are likely to lead. Often demands have superficial appearances of being reasonable and worthy of respect. A closer look may reveal that the demands are likely to lead to tragic consequences---no matter how respectable, powerful and honored are the people who make the demands in the name of much that seems to be beyond question and doubt.
