Compulsivity, preoccupation with issues of control and dichotomous questions and a refusal to deal openly and honestly with complexity and ambiguity are inter-related. People who are embarrassed by ambiguous situations seek to avoid them by pretending that complex and/or ambiguous situations are simpler than they really are. Thus they get involved in the use of pretense, deception, dishonesty and collusions as coping tools. Continuous spectrums of alternative possibilities are too complex; so they turn them into occasions for choosing either of just two possibilities; what they call the "good" and what they call the "evil" one. Life is no more than choosing between "good" and "evil" dichotomous choices. When they are done with simplifying life each situation entails a choice between "good" and "evil"; not any choices between many alternative integrative courses of action. Part of the program for living which disintegrative people often create in the name of God---is a pattern of repression of the awareness of, or choice of, alternatives which they have not called "good". Any integrative alternatives which they have not called "good" they call "evil" and they repress the possibilities of those integrative alternatives. They make life too complicated for them to tolerate. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
