Certain kinds of behaviors are usually regarded as "bad", "intolerable", "inappropriate", "dis-respectful", "immoral", "wrong", "sinful", "illegal", "dis-integrative", "taboo", etc. Various people and communities respond in various ways to such non-conformal behaviors. 1. The emphasis may be limited to OBJECTIVE ACTIONS of a single person; e.g., committing murder, rape, or robbery. 2. The emphasis may be extended to failures to engage in REQUIRED OBJECTIVE ACTIONS; e.g., failing to recite some required religious creed, or failing to engage in some required religious ritual. 3. The emphasis may focus upon REFLEXIVE aspects of a SINGLE PERSON'S LIFE; e.g., prayer, meditation, study, reflection, self-criticism. 4. The emphasis may focus upon REFLEXIVE RELATIONSHIPS which involve two or more persons; e.g., close friendships, intimate relationships, and/or sexual relationships. 5. The emphasis may focus upon REFLEXIVE RELATIONSHIPS between SINGLE PEOPLE AS INDIVIDUALS and the COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE. 6. The emphasis may be upon do's and dont's; e.g., prescriptions, proscriptions, prohibitions, commandments, laws, taboos, etc. 7. The emphasis may be upon promoting understanding, cooperation, insight, sympathy, compassion, etc. 8. The emphasis may be upon issues of control and conformity. 9. The emphasis may be upon expanding opportunities and upon liberation to choose among alternatives. 10. The emphasis may be upon choosing sides in holy wars against evil. Whatever the emphasis may be, it is helpful to recognize, name, describe and talk about the nature of the emphasis---for by their fruits we may know whether each emphasis is disintegrative or integrative in regards to personal and communal integrities. We are bound to have great difficulties if we do not recognize the differences between the various emphases which characterize different people's paradigms---and so do not recognize the different fruits which flow from those different emphases.
