Humans do not function well in isolation. Humans who are isolated often are dysfunctional people, especially if they are embedded within a community from which they are isolated. It is one thing to be geographically isolated from other humans, and to survive in geographic isolation. It is another thing to be geographically embedded in a community of humans from which one is isolated through estrangement, alienation, excommunication, anger, resentment, coercion, rejection, etc. In the former case there are many clear examples of humans who have survived and lived in meaningful ways. In the latter case there are far less clear examples of humans surviving and living meaningful lives. In light of the above, it is tragically strange that when humans behave in dysfunctional ways the communal attempts at correcting their dysfunctional behaviors often include isolation through estrangement, alienation, excommunication, anger, resentment, coercion, rejection, etc. Upon what theory of human nature are such attempts based? Is there any evidence that such attempts are based upon a sound theory? What is that evidence? (c) 2005 by Paul A.
