Then we may fall into the trap of responding positively to statements because they include the words to which we have learned to respond positively by habit. In a similar way we may respond negatively to statements which include other words to which we have learned to respond negatively, with fear; e.g., words such as: NONCONFORMIST, UNRULY, UNDISCIPLINED, DIFFERENT, ALIEN, or STRANGE. In both kinds of situations we may respond unwisely---because we respond to the presence of trigger words, rather than to the whole meaning of each statement. Often our reactions are not appropriate: True statements often include trigger words to which we react with a negative emotion. False statements often include trigger words to which we react with a positive emotion. Such inappropriate reactions are not reasonable, intelligent, well informed or wise---and often have tragic consequences. We need to avoid letting our emotional reactions to trigger words lead us into unwisely reacting to true or false statements containing our particular "trigger words". (c) 2005 by Paul A.
