In the absence of the meeting of such needs infants get sick and die. In the absence of the meeting of such needs people become dis-eased, irritable, frustrated, resentful, angry and violent. Rejection, judgements, denials, condemnations, excommunications and their like are made often real through the lack of affection and gentle touching and their replacement with neglect and/or violence. Such neglect on the part of parents in their relationships with their children constitute passive abuse if violence is not present, and active abuse if violence is present. Affective rejection is violent when affective acceptance would be the healthy, normal and natural expectation; as in relationships between parents and their children, and between couples in a marriage or a similar covenanted relationship between competent adults. This, however, is not grounds for turning the expectation of affective acceptance into a manipulative tool by which to manipulate others in a dysfunctional relationship. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
