In such internalization of role models it is inevitable that there be the internalization of conflicts between/among the ideals, values and role models which are internalized. The child as a child may not recognize the internalized conflicts among/between them; through lack of an adequately developed independent conception of a personal adult and/or parent within. Through lack of knowledge and understanding, we as children internalize tragic conflicts among/between the dysfunctional role models whom we internalize. As we grow up and become adults and parents we need to do work to return to our earlier internalizations and resolve the conflicts between/among all the role models, ideals, and values that we internalized with inadequate knowledge and understanding. That work is cognitive, intellectual, and rational in character; as well as affective, emotional and spiritual in character. It is dangerous to approach such retrospective work with an exclusive, dichotomous, legalistic, judgmental or similar set of perceptions and attitudes. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
