Because concerns about salvation are ultimate concerns, conflicts over which form of conformity is essential for salvation are likely to escalate into ultimate conflicts in which ultimate weapons of destruction are readied for use against the agents of the devil. Proponents of differing kinds of conformity are bound to try to conform each other to their own kind of conformity. One cannot have ultimate respect for one's own kind of conformity in the face of people of integrity living meaningful lives while not conforming to one's own kind of conformity. Such integrity is a threat to one's own respect for one's own kind of conformity. Thus means must be found to produce one's own kind of conformity in people of integrity. Because conformity is the ultimate concern, the sacrifice of personal and communal integrity is not a matter for concern. People who believe that salvation resides in some form of conformity do not find their expected fulfillment in their various forms of conformity. This engenders doubts about their forms of salvation, and insecurity in those doubts. Their insecurity engenders defensiveness, heightened protestations of confidence, and requirements of recitations of belief in the prescribed means to salvation. Conformity as a means to salvation invites efforts by addictive leaders to control people's thoughts, feelings, experiences, perceptions, and communication. In the face of such efforts it is difficult for people of integrity to be true to themselves and to each other. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
