To understand and promote the possibilities of conflict resolution we need to be aware of the variety of kinds of conflicts; for the nature of appropriate conflict resolution depends greatly upon the nature of the conflict. The nature of a conflict depends upon the nature of the poles which characterize the conflict, and upon the nature of the issues over which there is conflict. The poles which characterize a conflict may be: INTERNAL ASPECTS of one person, individual persons, families, groups, clans, tribes, organizations, cities, states, nations, professions, ethnic groups, schools, religious groups, athletic teams, troops, unions, management, armies, political parties, etc. The issues over which there is conflict may be: ideals, values, meta-ideals, meta-values, constitutional rights, contractual rights, legislated rights, implicit rights, explicit rights, common-law rights, possessions, presumed-possessions, fears, risks, territory, reputations, impressions, expressions, texts, truths, addictions, codependencies, collusions, taboos, etc. Each combination of the above conflict poles with conflict issues suggests a possible kind of conflict---and thus suggests some possible kinds of conflict resolution; or conflict escalation; or conflict perpetuation. To promote conflict resolution we need to be aware of the possibilities in the full range of kinds of conflicts as regards combinations of kinds of conflict poles, and kinds of conflict issues. We need to take care not to ignore the differences between such combinations of conflict poles and conflict issues, and so treat different realities in the same way. To thoughtlessly treat one combination of conflict pole and conflict issue as if it were a different combination, will make it far more likely that there will be conflict escalation or perpetuation; rather than conflict resolution.
