We create structures and structured situations within which we hope to find meaning and satisfaction, and seek to protect them even when they are imperfect; for we fear the loss of imperfect structures when we cannot imagine, envision, find, or create any better structures. Our structures take on many forms: families and family relationships, friendships and groups of friends, classes in schools and classes of peoples, patterns of status and respect, clothing which represents class and status, patterns of language and education, scholarly works, scientific knowledge, etc. We find meaning and satisfaction within such structures, and fear situations which we see as chaotic, without structure. Scientists create what they regard to be objective structures; seeking to find the objective structures which they regard as inherently present in the universe. They create scholarly structures of research groups, classes, and publications; seeking to represent the objective structures which they regard as inherently present in the universe. Scientists find their meaning, significance, and satisfaction within the structures which they create, and so the structures which they create are not objective structures, for they reflect back upon the scientists who created them and find their personal meaning in them; the structures are reflexive structures about which the scientists cannot be objective by virtue of their dependence upon them for their sense of significance.
