Scientists include among themselves people who are compulsively fanatical about: objectivity, measurement, mathematics, analysis, manipulations, control, theory, repeatability, consensus, verification, certainty, generality, universality, etc. Balanced interest in each such focus of attention has its appropriate place, but some scientists carry their interest in some or all of such foci into places where they are quite inappropriate and dysfunctional; believing that one or more of the foci somehow have completely general and universal relevance to all kinds of places, situations and relationships. We will here refer to such people as COMPULSIVE SCIENTISTS because of their compulsive focus upon one or more of the traditional foci of scientists' interests. COMPULSIVE SCIENTISTS find it nearly impossible to deal wisely with human dilemmas which require quiet and honest reflection upon: themselves, their own personal situations, their own failures and mistakes, their own ideals and values; and their own bodies, feelings, desires, fears and intimate relationships. Such reflection is reflexive and: not-objective, not-measurable, not- mathematical, not-analytical, not-manipulative, not- controllable, not-theoretical, not-repeatable, not- consensual, not-verifiable, not-certain, not- generalizable, and not-universal. Such honest reflection fails most of the tests for scientific respectability; and so if engaged in would undermine scientists' ability to reflect favorably upon themselves. Since they prefer to reflect favorably upon themselves, they avoid behaviors which will undermine their ability to reflect favorably upon themselves. COMPULSIVE SCIENTISTS pretend to be objective all of the time. They are not honest with themselves, and so cannot act wisely. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
