In the scientists' paradigm there is much emphasis upon: analysis, elementary parts, quantitative knowledge, computations, mathematical languages, controlled experimentation, objectivity, manipulation, perfection, impersonal understanding, prediction and systematic management. The absence of or weak presence of any of one these features is often taken to be a sign of inadequate dedication to the scientists' paradigm; and so as a sign of personal weakness. People who are addicted to the scientists' paradigm are prone to approach personal relationships under the control of the scientific paradigm's motivations and guidance; and so are prone toward attitudes and behavior patterns which often lead to personal and communal disintegration. There are conflicts between the ideals and values which are inherent in the scientists' paradigm on the one hand; and the ideals and values which are essential to personal and communal integrity on the other hand. The following are essential to personal and communal integrity: 1. Participation in truly intimate personal relationships. 2. Honesty about self and other within intimate personal relationships. 3. Reflecting thoughtfully about self, other, others, and intimate personal relationships. 4. Facility with a wide range of channels of communication; which include, but are not limited to, formal languages. 5. Responding to dilemmas and technical problems in appropriately complementary ways. 6. A healthy balance as regards how time, energy, resources, attention, and creativity are used. 7. Listening carefully and sympathetically to people of a wide range of life styles and attitudes. 8. A profound dedication to promoting both personal and communal integrity. 9. Not trying to control what cannot be controlled. 10. Respect for all that is essentially mysterious and holy. The formal training of young scientists often weighs against them maintaining balance and respect with regards to all that is essential to promoting personal and communal integrity. The formal training of young scientists encourages an excessively and increasingly high level of narrow specialization, at the expense of developing a respect for all that is essential to both personal and communal integrity. The result is that with the best of intentions, scientists and engineers who are seeking to be of service to humanity become engaged in tragic endeavors which undermine personal and communal integrity; e.g., the arms races and the emphasis upon technological threats and violence during the twentieth century.
