To such people life is a conflict between the forces of good and the forces of evil; and they regard themselves as being on the side of the forces of good. Rarely do they notice that the people on the other side of their conflict often have made the very same assumptions, and regard themselves as being on the side of the forces of good in a conflict with the forces of evil. Such conflicts are conflicts between people who make the same tragic assumptions. They are unable to transcend their tragic assumptions. They are unable to resolve their conflicts, because according to the most basic assumptions that both sides have made; it is inherently stupid, foolish, unwise and perhaps even evil, to cooperate in any way with the people who have been fighting on the side of the forces of evil. People who are engaged in conflict need to transcend their preoccupation with being in control, and being concerned about who is in control. They need to ask new questions, and to get their attention off of the issue of control. They are addicted to their preoccupations and need to detach from their preoccupations in order to regain health and integrity. Only when they detach from their preoccupation with issues having to do with control; will they be able to listen to each other, learn from each other, transcend their misunderstandings of each other, and learn to cooperate with each other in resolving the conflicts which undermine their personal and communal integrity.
