The nature of much of human motivation will not be clear s long as it is rooted in hidden efforts of adult children. What is hidden must become clear, honestly faced, and grieved; else the adults will be driven by hidden motivations which are unreasonable and disintegrative. Attempts to rationalize such motivations in terms of sophisticated considerations, are dishonest and contribute to the perpetuation of the collusions, addictions and codependence which gave rise to them. To understand human behavior we need to look behind the apparent motivations of sophisticated people to see what root needs such people are trying to fill: needs for affirmation, acceptance, affection, love, and nurture. When such needs have not been met in childhood, the children's sophisticated adults seek to meet the un-met needs in sophisticated ways which do not honestly acknowledge what the root needs are. Dishonestly sophisticated efforts to devise technologies, products, procedures, rituals and other manipulative procedures will not satisfactorily meet the hidden children's' needs. The hidden needs can only be met when they are brought out into the open and honestly dealt with. Sophisticated hiding of children's' needs does NOT deprive the un-met needs of their driving power, and so it is that sophisticated adult children are often driven to act out their childhoods' un-met needs, without understanding and without satisfaction. In each compulsive businessman, researcher, teacher, politician, professional and religious leader there may be hidden motivations rooted in an un- acknowledged childhood of emotional poverty. There are no technical solutions to the perceived technical problem of controlling the dysfunctional behavior of such compulsive people. The dilemma is to find ways to enable them to openly and honestly deal with their hidden motivations. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
