There must be some limits, boundaries imposed upon individual freedom if the community as a whole is to survive. People who regard themselves as good people often feel that they know how those whom they regard as not as "good" as they are should behave. Such "good" people fear unregulated behavior and take steps to insure that undisciplined people are properly disciplined so that they will behave as "good" people do. Upon what principles should such discipline be based? How are un-disciplined people to be brought under proper control? To effectively bring them under control it is necessary to control whatever it is that leads to threatening behavior; e.g., their attitudes, perceptions, feelings, understandings, memories, responses, etc. An effective program of control must be comprehensive if it is to be effective. Anything less would be imperfect and not worthy of respect. The tragedy is that such "good" people with the best of intentions occasion much frustration, resentment, anger, rebellion, alienation, estrangement, misunderstand-standing, conflict, violence, etc. which they do not know how to control. They rarely respect persons as persons; respecting persons only as fulfillment of their abstract ideals. Such "good" idealists rarely fulfill their ideals because the fulfillment of their ideals would entail more control than is consistent with personal and communal integrity and health. Their efforts lead to personal and communal disintegration before they can succeed in fulfilling their ideals. They only way it is possible to appear to have fulfilled the ideals of such "good" people is to be dishonest regarding the real world of uncontrolled perceptions, feelings, memories, responses; and dishonest about not being authentic in open and honest personal relationships. The essence of their program calls for dishonesty which leads to the disintegration of their efforts and communities. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
