If students are regarded as means to technical ends, there is not likely to be much liberation; the students will be used and abused, either actively or passively. This will be true even if the technical ends are defined in terms of the achievement of instructional goals by the professor or the teacher. If the goals are defined and achieved by the instructor, the students are most likely going to be regarded as means to those ends, and so be used and abused either actively or passively. The students are unlikely to be perceived as and received participants in personal relationships. When students are not accepted as participants in personal relationships there is estrangement, alienation, and a minimum of personal communication which is open, authentic, honest, intimate, trustful, liberating, etc. The development of sophisticated techniques of instruction does not compensate for the absence of authentic, honest, intimate, trustful, liberating personal relationships. The substitution of one for the other is ineffective. Balance is essential and is not achieved by replacing one with the other. Balance is not achieved unilaterally by students, professors, teachers or administrators acting in the absence of full dialogue and honest cooperation with the others. The absence of efforts by one segment of the learning community cannot be balanced by unilateral efforts on the part of another segment of the learning community. Balance is not achieved by over compensation. The quality of an educational venture depends greatly upon the quality of the interpersonal communications among the participants in the educational venture. The quality of interpersonal communications is not a technical matter and cannot be controlled by technical considerations on the part of technical experts and authorities. The quality of interpersonal communications cannot be controlled by any segment of the community; it is a function of the fears, desires and efforts of all members of the community.
