The choice to spend one's own time doing one thing rather than spend one's own time doing another thing is an expression of what one considers to be important in a given context. Values have to do with the allocation of scarce resources: time, energy, creativity, opportunities, raw materials, manufactured goods, information, education, etc. All behavior entails the allocation of resources, even if only the time of the persons who are engaged in the behavior. Values may be implicit in behavior without having first been made explicit in any overt communication. In fact, most values are implicit in behaviors rather than explicit in communications of ideals and overt statements of relative importance. No behavior is value neutral, because all behavior entails the use of the limited life time of those engaged in the behavior. Each behavior is an overt declaration of the worth of spending time engaged in the behavior, and is a role model affirmation of the value implicit in the behavior. Each behavior occurs in the context of an opportunity to engage in other behaviors. Such an opportunity may be a limited resource; an opportunity which occurs once---and never again in quite the same way. Unique opportunities created by the presence of particular combination of circumstances and persons are resource opportunities which are fulfilled or not fulfilled, depending upon the behaviors of the persons who are present. Each pattern of behavior is an affirmation of the worth of fulfilling one among many opportunities, by neglecting the other opportunities present in the given context. Thus, no behavior is value neutral. No human creation is value neutral, because each human creation is the product of some pattern of human behaviors and so represents those human behaviors. To affirm any human creation by attending to it is to affirm the worth of the human behaviors which created that which is affirmed. To spend time criticizing a creation is to affirm that it is worth spending one's time with that creation as the focus of attention; to let its presence lead one's behavior. All focusing of attention is value laden. To pretend it is not, is also the focusing of attention and so is value laden. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
