Some acts are moral and/or ethical but are illegal. Some acts are legal, moral and ethical; but violate the sense of propriety of insecure people whose lives are dominated by fear which is not clearly focused. All of these considerations depend greatly upon culture, time, and place. No one culture can provide a definition in terms of which to make sound judgments of the adequacy of the provisions of any other culture. The propriety of distinctions are contextually dependent. Standards for judgment which are appropriate within one cultural context are not appropriate within another cultural context. Yet, we may reasonably ask if there principles and/or guidelines which transcend the differences in cultures. Wise decisions take into account the cultural context. No culture can reasonably hold the view that members of other cultures should not take into account the local cultural context in making wise decisions regarding how to most creatively interact with members of the local culture. Wise decisions should lead to the enhancement of both personal and communal integrity of the participants in the decisions and of the persons affected by the decisions. In a global sense wise decisions enhance both personal and communal integrity. It is absurd for any culture to hold that truly wise decisions will lead to the disintegration of its culture and its members. The promotion of both personal and communal integrity is essential to any culture and to the survival of its values, ideals and community. No culture can with integrity work to sustain any of its cultural aspects which function in ways which undermine personal/communal integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
