Yet imprudent fear is itself something to be feared about all other circumstances. Fear tends to paralyze, to prevent integrative thought, perspectives, decisions and actions. The fear of guilt is the fear of self rejection. Fear of guilt is not a reality which is unavoidably under the control of others; it is a reality which is subjective and may be subject to one's own will. It is not integrative to fear guilt in the same way which one fears that over which one has no power. Fear of guilt paralyzes one, and prevents one from wisely dealing with the possibility of self rejection. There are people who teach us to reject ourselves. Those people lack personal and communal integrity, and they sow seeds of personal and communal disintegration. The way to deal with fear of guilt it to learn how to transcend the temptation to reject our selves. The usual way to try to deal with guilt is to try to avoid doing what others threaten to use as behavioral excuses for rejecting us; this way puts into the hands of disintegrative people the power to control us. Such unrestrained power corrupts them and disintegrates us. We have no responsibility to grant them such power. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
