Sexual survival embodies an eternal conflict and a need to achieve a balance between the instinct to be defensive and the instinct to be intimate in secure contexts. Being defensive often undermines the possibility of security because defensiveness often is perfected to the point that it threatens the security of others and invites a parallel defensive response on the part of those against one was being defensive. Such a feed-back loop of reactions and counter-reactions leads to an escalation of conflict, and so to an intensification of defensiveness and insecurity. Such a cycle is counter-productive and does not promote the survival of the species. The conflict between the instinctive need to be defensive and the instinctive need to be secure in intimacy---is heightened when it is dominated by consciousness and a conformal need/desire of others to govern the two instincts in keeping with convergent formal conceptions of what constitutes proper and what constitutes improper forms of defensiveness and intimacy. Then different members of the same species need to be on the defensive against each other's judgments, condemnations and rejections; while at the same time seeking opportunities for intimacy in the context of security. In such a collection of defensive members of a species it is difficult for there to exist a collective sense of mutually supported security within which intimate dialogue among defensive members is possible. When defensiveness dominates and undermines intimacy the integrity of both the community and its members is severely threatened. At the level of instinct there is a conflict between the need to be defensive and the need to be intimate. The achievement of balance at the level of instinct is a miracle. To enjoy balance at the level of consciousness will be another miracle. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
