They fear that in the absence of a commitment to objectivity they will let subjective relationships cause them to ignore important evidence, or to use misleading patterns of thought. It is important to pay attention, not ignore, the fact that the motives for possibly ignoring important evidence, and for possibly using misleading patterns of thought, pertain to disintegrative subjective relationships. In an effort to deal with disintegrative subjective relationships, scientists commit themselves to dealing only with objective relationships, and so ignore subjective relationships, and use misleading patterns of thought to conceal the fact that they are ignoring important evidence which relates in a central way to the reasons for the motivations which drive and guide their particular kinds of bias. Alienation engenders fear of how other people will regard one's own behavior. When we are alienated we fear that in the absence of a commitment to the conformal thought pattern "they" will subject us to excommunicative relations, and cause "them" to ignore us as important members of "their" community, or to use misleading patterns of thinking about us, to make us look to be "evil". The essence of evil behavior is the engendering of such a feed-back loop in the progressive break down of channels of communication, including the process of the objectification and depersonalization of people seeking to avoid bias by ignoring subjective relationships. In a tragic way the ideal of objectivity undermines the central purpose of that ideal; i.e., the purpose of transcending bias. When the ideal of objectivity leads to alienation, the alienation blocks the free flow of some kinds of information, perceptions, opinions, etc. The selective blockage of communication constitutes bias which originates in an alienative effort to transcend bias; a tragedy in the classic Greek sense of alienation through the fulfillment of high ideals. These considerations clearly indicate that objectivity is not appropriate as the focus of ultimate concern and reverence. Objectivity is not the way to transcend bias, for it leads to alienation which blocks non-objective communications; creating thereby a particular kind of bias. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
