Such beliefs may pertain to religion, sexuality, economics, war, family life, finite resources, human finitude, etc. Minorities within a society may see through the collusions of their society, or participate in collusions which are in conflict otherwise with the formal institutions and traditions of their society. The minorities seek coherence and integrity in ways which are in conflict with the ways in which the formal institutions and traditions seek to achieve coherence and integrity. If the society as a whole is repressive towards non- conformists the minorities must operate "underground" to avoid overt threats to their integrity by those who through violent behavior would seek to maintain the kind of integrity promoted by formal institutions and traditions. The violent behavior is called for due to the collusions and taboos. The "legitimate" use of violence to promote integrity is a sign that there are collusions and taboos operating in the definition of what is real, valuable, worthy of respect, integrative. Violence is fundamentally disintegrative. To use violence to attempt to promote integrity is to use disintegrative tools to attempt to promote integration. The theory of social integration is not whole unless it gives due account of the causes and consequences of violence used in attempts to coerce conformity to conventional/formal definitions of integrity. Disintegration is a consequence of violence among competing attempts to achieve integrity, violence used to try to force a "fit" in keeping with a collusion. Any attempt to eliminate violence by coercive means is not based upon an integrative theory which is consistent with the facts of life. A resort to coercion/violence is a confession of inadequacy as regards the understanding of how to promote personal and social integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
