Revenge is an act of anger in which a vengeful person expresses violent feelings in violent ways. Vengeance is an attempt to even the score of victimizing behavior; the reverse of favoritism. Revenge presumes a calculative approach to human relationships with a concern to keep negative scores balanced. Revenge is rationalized with statements to the effect that punishment will motivate people to avoid doing that which occasioned the revenge. Such a rationalization is based upon the assumption that human behavior is motivated by reasoned consideration of probable consequences. Their rationalization of revenge is to be taken seriously only if one believes that people seek ways to avoid revenge. Such a belief is not supported by actual patterns of human behavior of revenge and counter-revenge. Revenge intensifies the alienation which occasioned the previous offense and so increased the probability of additional offenses. The probable consequence of revenge is counter-revenge. According to the rationalization of revenge people should avoid revenge because the probable consequences are revenge and counter-revenge. Revenge leads to the disintegration of the community and by any reasoned consideration should be avoided; yet all to often it is sought with great passion. To achieve the integration of our communities we need to reveal the fallacies in the rationalization of revenge and the ways in which seeking revenge undermine the unity and integrity of communities. The actual, rather than the theoretical, consequences of taking revenge need to be documented and their dynamics need to be understood. Through collusions rationalizations are too often accepted as descriptive of realities, when actual experience is quite the contrary. These considerations are relevant to the treatment of prisoners, terrorists, and to children who might grow up to be prisoners and terrorists. They are also relevant to the formulation of international policies relating to unruly nations. Revenge involving nuclear weapons should be a matter of world-wide concern. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
