Other times people avoid each other in aversion reactions because of objectionable attributes that they perceive in each other's behavior. Not so often recognized is the avoidance of each other due to absences of behavior patterns. It is harder to consciously perceive the absence of an essential, than to consciously perceive the presence of an irritant. Yet the absence of an essential is a reasonable ground for an aversive reaction. We may reasonably avoid people who fail to be understanding, sympathetic, listeners, forgiving, supportive, humble, tolerant, respectful, thoughtful, generous, etc. These considerations are important in understanding the ways in which students are attracted to and are aversive towards various teachers and professions. The behavior of students towards individual teachers and professors often has only individual significance. It may also have very broad implications; e.g., when there is a systematic pattern within a profession which makes a large majority of the members of the teachers in a profession elicit aversive reactions of avoidance among creative students who might otherwise enter and enliven the profession. A systematic pattern of avoidance of professors of a profession generates a situation in which the members of the profession are unlikely to have the power to correct the situation. The pattern of avoidance deprives them of feed-back which is essential to the professional leaders coming to an understanding of the nature of the situation. In ignorance of what is occasioning the avoidance the leaders are unable to take intelligent steps to reduce the occasion for aversive reactions and so improve the rate of feed-back. The situation is especially ironic when the source of the problem is the lack of feed-back from the professors to students. Such a lack/absence is harder to recognize that would be the presence of obvious objectionable behavior. It is tragic when a profession's highest ideals inhibit the operation of feed-back loops by which the best of the present generation of professional leaders are alienated from the best of the potential future leaders of the profession.
