Teaching science is not a science. Teaching science is not objective; it is self-referential. Teaching science is professing a personal belief; the belief that it is worth spending one's finite time, energy, creativity and resources in the ways which scientists spend theirs. Teaching science is bearing witness to what one believes, it is not objective behavior. Teaching science is declaring what value judgments you have made and affirming judgments and decisions based upon them. Thus, teaching science is self-referential and so non-objective behavior. To be an effective science teacher one must be enthusiastic. To be enthusiastic one must set aside doubts about one's professions of belief in the value of scientists' affirmations. This is made easier for objective scientists by believing that those personal affirmations are declarations of objective truths. Thus the most successful science teachers believe that their personal affirmations are in fact objective statements which should not be doubted, and should not be examined. To encourage science professors to be responsible in their priority-setting decisions and actions---we must take the steps which are necessary to hold them accountable in ways which promote both personal and communal integrity---by promoting the integration of complementary people, ideas and communities.
