The effective lessons of infancy and childhood sink deep. Mere intellectual/rational processes do not overcome such effective learning in a way which will effect behavior and affect. Lessons which have been learned by watching role models may be unlearned only by watching new and respected role models. For positive effective results, the watching of the new role models must occur in a context with positive connotations; in a setting characterized by a profound sense of security and freedom. It is for these reasons that authoritarian educational systems are unlikely to prompt positive learning. Authoritarians can rarely generate positive contexts within which to lead students to positive effective learning. Authoritarians are prone to threaten students with conditional acceptance based upon conformal behavior. They are likely to provide role models whose behavior is based fundamentally upon various kinds of fear, rather than upon positive effect. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
