The kind of learning which occurs flows from the context. The content of learning is in part independent of the context; but the use to which learning is put is largely motivated by the learning context. Threatening contexts which engender fear teach students to put their learning to threatening and fear- engendering uses; supportive humane contexts teach students how to cope in cooperative communal ways. Depersonalizing contexts undermine dialogue, community, and social structures. In depersonalizing contexts students learn content along with motivations to use what they learn in anti-communal competitive ways. They use newly acquired knowledge as manipulative/coercive means in contests of power and violence. The means which teachers use to motivate students' learning, teaches students the motivations which the students will be prone to follow in making us of the content which they were taught. If the teachers make use of coercive, manipulative, fear engendering means to promote learning; the students will learn from their teachers motivations which are driven by the fear of coercive manipulation, and will be directed to use what they have learned to respond in coercive manipulative ways to that fear. It is important to attend to the quality of the context in which students learn. What are the students learning about themselves, interpersonal relations, cooperation, values, motivations? It is important to perceive what the students learn about their teachers and how to cope with their teachers' failings. One key is to focus upon what the students actually learn, rather than just upon what the teacher intends for them to learn, and upon which the teacher tests for. All teachers are successful in teaching what the students actually learn, but the question is what do the students actually learn. What students actually learn depends upon the context created by the dynamic interactions among students and teachers in their personalizing and/or depersonalizing relationships within and without the classroom. Learning is always contextual. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
