Jill is affirmed and encouraged when she fulfills Jack's expectations of incompetence, but not when she is positively successful. Her success is the fulfillment of Jack's expectations of incompetence. Since success leads to success she becomes more and more incompetent in order to become more successful. Jack, in recognition of her increasing success at fulfilling his expectations, puts Jill down more and more to confirm his expectations of her and her success in fulfilling his expectations. Jill is in a double bind. Jack gives her contradictory signals, and because she loves Jack she tries to follow the contradictory signals; and is torn apart by her efforts. She sacrifices her integrity in her effort to win genuine affirmation from Jack who has put her in a double bind. Her "love" for Jack and his "love" for her blinds her to the violence in their relationship; and so she is unable to reject the perverse relationship. Her peers think that she and Jack make "such a nice couple"; their affirmation of their relationship makes it difficult to see the relationship clearly. Jill finds it difficult to take her tentative doubts about their "love" seriously, and she buries them deep in her subconscious where they begin to do great mischief. Jack and Jill are not mutually dedicated to discovery of each other's potentials and the fulfillment of those potentials in service. They are dedicated to conformity to expectation, and are trapped by specific expectations which are ill-suited to them as unique individuals. Their sub-culture in defense of traditions is inclined to maintain traditional expectations' double lock on the prison in which Jack and Jill are trapped. If Jill were to perceive the injustice in her situation, she would fail to conform to expectation; she would fail to fail, and for that failure she would be severely punished. She has been trained that her only forms of success are continued failures, and her failure to perceive the perverse form of her success. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
