They perceived their souls as the essence of their being, and much of their doing followed with integrity from their being, their souls. When Adam and Eve ate of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil they believed that they had found the means to salvation, when in fact they had discovered the way to damnation; the knowledge of what is good and what is evil is used primarily to alienate people who one considers to be a threat to one's own salvation; because close association with such people may make one's self guilty by association. Thus Adam and Eve lost their belief in their eternal souls, and regarded their souls as corruptible and in need of protection from damnation; i.e., salvation. Their behavior and conformity to expectations became the means to the improvement of their souls to make them fit for eternal life. They became preoccupied with their doing, rather than with being at ease in their being true to themselves and each other. Preoccupation with conformal doing diverted attention away from being, and from the reality of people's souls. Proper doing became more and more important; being with integrity became less and less important. Eventually behaviorists came to the logical conclusion---there is no soul, there is no being; there is only doing, behavior. Security must be found in daily proper behavior; in the daily threat of excommunication for non-conformal behavior which threatens others with damnation due to guilt by association. Such security is never found, and the soul no longer exists as the ground of a person's being; so the people's doing is like grass blowing in the wind. The people have no anchor in their being, so they behave like grass tossed to and fro; or like ocean waves toss a helpless boat against the shores of being and non-being. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
