In Jill's family feelings were not openly expressed and she never learned how to recognize feelings. The members of her family and her teachers felt that it was improper to openly and honestly express feelings, and very intelligently rationalized their insensitive behavior. Jill does not and can not perceive feelings, and so feelings are not part of her objective world. Jill can not sympathize with Jack's feeling that he has been put down. Kathy grew up in a subculture in which feelings were openly and honestly expressed and unconditionally respected. Kathy can see how Jill put Jack down, and sympathizes with Jack's frustration over Jill's inability to perceive and sympathize. The put-down and Jack's feelings are among the subjective realities which Kathy and the members of her sub-culture perceive and openly deal with in community. Jill with intellectual sophistication contends that Kathy and members of her sub- culture are too subjective (subject-oriented) and are perceiving figments of their imaginations which are not objective (object-oriented) realities. John dimly sees what is going on among Jill, Jack and Kathy, but he does not have tenure and does not fell secure in being open about what he perceives. He is up for promotion and tenure, and does not want to risk his chances of being accepted by his academic community. He is tantalized by the level of mutual acceptance and open dialogue which he perceives in Kathy's empathic community. His fear blocks a really clear perception of the possibilities and the alternatives. For this reason he is not in a position to make a wise decision among the possibilities and alternatives. His intellectual community's collusions and taboos blind him so that ha can not accept the knowledge which would liberate him from the prison of his exclusive objectivity. Professor Jill feels that as a student Jack is not fully dedicated to his studies and shows Jack little sympathy. As a result Jack fails in his work under Jill and flunks out of school. Professor Jill resents Assistant Professor John's expressions of sympathy for Jack in his problems, and so Professor Jill undermines John's bid for tenure and promotion. Fear reigns supreme.
