When conflict arises between students' expectations and observations, then through resolution of the conflict learning takes place. When common sense and theory predict different outcomes, it is possible to check both through observation. Then there will be conflict between either common sense and observation, or between theory and observation. In either case learning takes place through the resolution of the conflict. The student that turns off common sense to avoid conflict between common sense and theory and/or between common sense and observation---is a student who will learn less than the student who maintains common sense at an active level and seeks to heighten awareness of the conflicts which arise. Those students who are encouraged to minimize conflict are thus likely to learn less than those students who are taught how to deal creatively with conflict. In most societies it is the females who are taught to minimize conflict and the males who are taught to create and deal with conflict. This pattern puts the females at a disadvantage which is then used to justify the pattern of teaching them to seek out situations which are apparently conflict free---because they as females are obviously not suited to dealing with conflict.
