The swiss did not decide to create the Alps Mountain, they did decide to create a tradition of universal military service. The mountains exist apart from their social processes; the tradition continues because of their social processes. It would be dishonest for them to act as if the mountains existed because of their social processes. It would also be dishonest for them to act as if universal military service were something which could not be changed through changing social processes. Some social realities do violence to individual members of a society, and some social realities may do violence to all members of a society. In such cases it is alienative to pretend that such violent social realities are objective realities---or ordained by God---so as to avoid the creative disturbances which would be involved in changing such violent/alienative realities. Objective laws regarding physical, chemical, and basic biological processes tend to be realities which societies cannot change. The higher up the scale of processes towards those which we call personal and social, the greater is the degree to which human choices play roles in determining the exact course of events. It is the wise society which recognizes in a realistic way which are objective realities, and which are social realities. Human institutions, life styles, religious, political systems, economic systems, nations, taboos, collusions, and traditions are clearly social realities. Societies which pretend otherwise are not wise. When such realities act to inhibit dialogue and understanding, they are alienative, tending to violate the welfare of members of the societies which create such evil realities. The essence of evil is the generation of misunderstanding and alienation. People are not ever essentially evil. Exclusive dedication to alienative values and the behaviors occasioned by such exclusive dedication is essentially evil. The exclusive dedication to social realities as if they were objective realities is very likely to be evil. People who do not know the difference between social and objective realities are likely to behave in evil ways and to be involved in evil relationships. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
