Logical behavior flows from logical consideration and may be behavior totally unlike any previously engaged in. Logical behavior flows from concepts and abstract relationships, not from personal observations and relationships. Logical behavior flows from conclusions of an intellectual sort; not from emotion and affection, instincts, intuition, personal desires, etc. Most human behavior is not logical behavior. Most people follow examples which they have observed. We copy the behavior of people with whom we have identified emotionally. We can depart from exemplary behavior by only small amounts. The rebellious adolescent copies the parent in some ways---in spite of the rebellion in many instances. Science teachers expect their students to engage in logical behavior with relatively little offered in the way of attractive role models. The expectation is that problem-solving will follow naturally from abstract principles which the students have never seen applied. The students are expected to perform experiments with equipment which the students have never seen before, much less ever seen anybody they cared about make use of. They are expected to draw conclusions which they have never watched anybody they cared about work out. They are expected to write in a literary style which they have never had occasion to read with any sense of personal pleasure. Such logical behavior is rather unusual. Effective science education gives balanced consideration to the emotional and affective aspects of students motivations, responses, and inter-personal relationships. Attractive scientists seek to offer themselves as role models with whom their students can easily identify and follow as exemplars. The process of effective instruction is not fundamentally and exclusively a logical process. The emotional and affective aspects need to be given balanced consideration. Only when science education is so balanced can we expect the uses of science and technology to be supportive of balanced human relationships. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
