They take for granted that the ultimate nature of reality is not a matter of human belief, desire, or choice. Some things are real quite independently of our wishes; other things will not, cannot, be real no matter what our wishes are. The task of the scientist is to discover what is real, not to decide what should be made real. Belief in an objective reality lifts a burden of choice from objective scientists---just as belief in an infallible church often lifts a burden of choice from the religious believer. The scientist places his or her faith in the unchanging nature of a reality which is independent of human choice. The religious believer places his or her faith in the unchanging nature of the reality represented by representatives of God. Some people believe that human choice always plays a central role in the nature of reality experienced, discovered, understood, etc. by humans; that there is no reality which is independent of human desires and choices. There may, however, be implicit in their discussions the assumption that there exists a meta-reality which governs the dynamics of human desires and choices and realizations. There may be rules which govern what realities humans can realize, and what realities are beyond human realization. The rules specify the price to be paid for the realization of differing levels of reality, and the procedures to be followed (with alternatives) to realize such realities. Clearly, then, one of the human wishes will be to discover (realize?) the nature of the meta-reality which governs human discovery (realization?) of realities? Then, of course, we must discover (realize?) whether or not the meta-reality is, or is not, a reality which is beyond human choice. Is the nature of the meta-reality itself objective, or is it determined by what we wish, desire, choose? How is that question to be decided? Perhaps the answer to that question depends in part on whether we ask it, and if we ask it, the answer depends in part on how we fashion the question? The answer thus clearly depends in part on how we desire to ask the question. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
