Attention is focused upon them precisely because they are conserved quantities. Because the pattern of prioritization is so consistent, scientists tend to behave as if only conserved quantities are important. This is a very natural reversal of logic to the exact scientist, even though it may appear absurd when stated verbally to the non-exact knower of human nature. Love is regarded by many as an important focus of attention, an so is a candidate for a conserved quantity to the exact scientist. Each person has only so much love, and can give love away only until the person's supply is exhausted. Each person needs to acquire love from others before it can be given away. Each person must be careful not to give away more love than is acquired, or a love-debt is likely to develop. A love-debt is not likely to be a positive sort of thing, considering it is a negative quantity. Thus quantitative people are likely to be cautious in giving away love, out of fear that they may run out of love. For them love does not cast out fear; rather, fear holds back love. This follows from the assumption that something as important as love must be a conserved quantity. People who know that love is not a conserved quantity are free to be in affective dialogue without fear that dialogue will leave them impoverished. They know that in love is in dialogue and in dialogue is in love, and that therein they are enriched in a way which is inconsistent with quantitative conservation laws. To give love is to be open to receive and free to give in dialogue. No conserved quantity is given in giving love, no conserved quantity is lost in giving love, no conserved quantity is acquired in receiving love. Love is conceived in loving relationships, it grows in dialogue to the extent that dialogue is mutual. Love is a way of meeting, not what is exchanged, acquired, given, lost, or conserved in meeting.
