They seek security in subcultures which offer them protection against doubt, ambiguity, vulnerability, and critical examination of fundamental presuppositions. Because they have not enjoyed the support of genuine human love, they seek certainty in technical creations of men. They strive for technical security. The world-wide arms race is an example of such compulsive striving for security grounded in technical creations which are worshipped by emotionally insecure children of God. The technically oriented people who motivate and direct the arms race have been taught by insecure teachers who have taken refuge in academic sub-cultures --- in an effort to find security to compensate for their emotionally impoverished childhoods. The job security which is offered is comforting. Protection from the criticism of people of diverse orientations is offered by highly specialized departmental sub-cultures. Academics rarely have to prove that they can listen with understanding to people with widely divergent perspectives. They rarely have to survive on the basis of making themselves understood by people of quite different orientations. Specialized departments and research efforts offer a womb-like protection which gives a feelings of security which is much desired. Within the classroom professors have unbalanced power which gives them a sense of security. With that power they can protect themselves against cutting criticism by students; grades make students think criticism over very carefully before it is offered. By making legitimacy be based upon technical sophistication --- professors undercut the possibility of students effectively challenging their power, and thus make themselves invulnerable through the use of technology. They offer their kind of elitist security to a select few who show the least disposition to undermine its foundations. The affirmation of such capable students augment the certainty, security, and power of the professors who are in power. Ambivalent students who doubt the worth and meaning of their professors' system --- do not acquire the traditional forms of power and security.
