They know the power which mystery has over people, and want to share in the power which only the mysterious can exercise. To acquire that power they cloth themselves in the mystery --- which they deny to natural processes and to personal relationships. By eliminating mystery from all but their own domain --- they would acquire a monopoly upon power to control human perceptions, desires, and behavior. They do not seek to explain the mystery of their desire to capture and control such unrestrained power, nor how they will avoid its corrupting effects upon them as persons. To help concentrate power in the hands of scientists teachers mystify scientific concepts for all but the few students who willingly internalize the scientists' way of approaching their environment. Students who ask questions in the wrong language, in self-incriminating ways, in ways which challenge the scientists' presuppositions --- are students who experience mystification in the presence of science teachers. The purpose of such teachers with regards to such students is to create scientific mysteries which the students will respect, but not understand. Then the students will respect and grant power to those who understand the scientific mysteries, because scientists must be wise men to comprehend such wonderful mysteries. The mystification process is aided by promoting wonder at realities perceived through the filters of scientific understanding. The universe is more wondrous through the imagination and concepts of scientists, than through the naked eye. There are mysteries to behold with the scientists' instruments and concepts, and the non- scientist is taught to appreciate such mysteries and those scientists who make it possible for them to be perceived, and who understand such wondrous mysteries. Such wise men are to be respected, and their advice is to be respected. The demystification of science will not be a scientific process dominated by scientists. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
