Professionals usually are elitists and guard the special knowledge of their profession. The professional secrets are not to be shared with just anybody. Secrets are shared with only the right kinds of people, with people who ask the right kinds of questions in the right kinds of ways. To elicit an informative response from a professional --- a question must be asked in a language which affirms the presuppositions and biases of the professional. This means that the questioner must have already internalized many of the values and concepts of the professional, along with attitudes and feelings toward whatever may be the focus of the question. The question must not reveal incongruous attitudes, feelings, and presuppositions---for such revelations will indicate to the professional that the asker is not qualified to receive the answer. The professional can tell whether or not the person asking the question will adjust well to the professional collusions, and responds in a facilitating way only to those who ask well adjusted questions. These professional tendencies create debilitating contexts for students who seek to become professionals. They can not understand the rules by which teachers help some students and discourage other students of equal ability. The rules are not stated by anybody. Often the students who ask the most profound questions are given the cold shoulder, because their profound questions clearly reveal that they would not become well adjusted professionals. The students who ask routine technical questions are warmly welcomed to the professional collusions and are well rewarded for their quick learning of traditional collusive truths. What you learn depends upon what questions you ask, the manner in which you ask them, the language you use to ask the question, and whom you ask the questions. It is well to formulate and ask your questions prudently. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
