The manner of description may be incongruous to the nature of the reality, and so to attempt a description in a manner which is inappropriate to the reality --- is to violate the reality. To describe an intimate friendship with a differential equation will not do justice to the friendship. Thus, not all descriptions are helpful. Even if the description is the best description of its kind, it may not be helpful, and may even be a violent description. Not all true statements about reality are helpful. The nature of a reality may be changed by making statements about the reality, even if the statements are absolutely true statements. Realities are not always independent of descriptions of the realities. Objective realities are not much changed by describing them. Many subjective realities depend very much upon how they are described, and may not exist in any consensual way apart from descriptions of them. To describe such realities may create, change, violate, destroy, etc. them. The language used to describe such a reality molds the description of the reality, and so the reality which is described/realized by the process. Thus it is important to choose the language with care. There are realities of which we can be aware without description, and such awareness may be shared without describing them, by mutual awareness of the realities through non-descriptive pointing. There is a difference between pointing to a reality and describing the reality. Pointing is not of itself likely to be violent; even though contextually pointing may have violent overtones--- as in the case of ridicule by pointing to make fun of a person. Charitable pointing helpfully calls attention to a presence without trying to define the nature of the presence. Attitudes toward realities are modeled by how we describe/point them. Two descriptions may be both true, and occasion quite different attitudes; thus they are not equivalent. Which true description is preferred is thus a value judgment based upon affective considerations. Thus true statements are not value neutral. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
