They may teach us that satisfaction is occasioned only by resource consumption, or that satisfaction is occasioned by awareness of natural beauty. We may learn from them that life is an endless quest for satisfaction---which never comes. They may role model for us a pattern of perpetual dissatisfaction regardless of how much we are given and/or acquire---by teaching us that desires always outstrip fulfillment moment by moment. If we never know anybody whom we respect who is satisfied---it is virtually impossible for us to enjoy any satisfaction. We come to respect and copy dissatisfaction as a way of life. Our patterns of being satisfied or dissatisfied are as much learned---as are our techniques for achieving satisfaction. The flawless execution of the most appropriate and most sophisticated techniques will not bring us satisfaction---if we have learned perpetual dissatisfaction from our primary role models. The enjoyment of satisfaction is not a technological achievement. The enjoyment of satisfaction is a gift given to us by important other persons in our lives during our infancy, childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. If we have NOT learned how to be satisfied by the time we are adults, it is not very likely that we will learn as adults. As adults we will probably exemplify the patterns we learned from our role models in our younger years. Achieving a personally chosen goal of being first in one or more contests will not bring us satisfaction---if we have not learned how to be satisfied from our primary role models. Achievement does not bring us satisfaction---unless we have learned from trusted role models how to be satisfied with achievements. If our trusted role models were always dissatisfied with their achievements---so also will we tend to be dissatisfied with our achievements. We are unlikely to enjoy and gain satisfaction from our possessions (no matter their number, quality, or cost)---unless we have learned from our trusted role models how to enjoy and be satisfied with possessions. Number, quality, and cost of possessions will not compensate for tragic learning regarding enjoyment and satisfaction. We are not likely to enjoy and be satisfied with our friends---if our role models did not enjoy and were not satisfied with their best friends. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
